It all began in 1107 with the installation of the hermit Ligerius in the dunes of Koksijde. He founded a Benedictine abbey. In 1253, the abbey has 120 monks and 248 brothers. The lands extend over 10,000 ha.
After the rebellion of Flanders against the king of France, in 1302, the abbey was destroyed.
In the sixteenth century, the community, which has more than 25 monks moved to the farm Abbey Ten Bogaerde.
In 1627 the community retired to the shelter in Bruges Ter Doest '.
To extend the farm lands of the monastery, the monks built, from materials of the Abbey of the Dunes, the medium-size farms.
